Longest Drive beim Golf

Mit dem Golfball wurde schon sehr viel Unfug angestellt. Er soll 350m weit auf dem Mond geflogen sein und 48mal den Erdball umrundet haben, nachdem am 24.11.06 von der Raumstation ISS mit einem Eisen 6 geschlagen wurde. Auch der längste Golfschlag auf der Erde, ein 684,8 yards (ca. 610 m) weiter Abschlag auf einer Flughafen-Landebahn, hat mit dem Golfsport wenig zu tun.

Von Interesse ist aber der längste Abschlag, der je auf einem Golfplatz gemacht wurde. Das schaffte der 2,03m große ehemalige Baseball-Spieler Mike Dobbyn am 17. Juli 2007 in Nevada. 551 Yards prügelte er den Ball das Fairway hinunter.

Der längste Abschlag bei einem offiziellen Profi-Golfturnier hat dagegen schon längere Zeit Bestand. Erzielt wurde er von Mike Austin mit einer Länge von 515 yards (471m). Sein Ball landete auf einem Par4 Loch in Las Vegas 65 yards hinter dem Grün. Geschehen ist dies am 25. September 1974 bei einem Seniorenturnier der PGA of America. Mike Austin war damals 64 Jahre alt.

Auch wenn für solche Superweiten eine ganze Menge Faktoren zusammenkommen müssen, werden Jahr für Jahr immer wieder außergewöhnliche Abschläge gemessen. Während bei Longest Drive Meisterschaften immer ebenerdig und mit wenig Rückenwind gespielt wird, gibt es auf der US PGA Tour einige Plätze, die für einen langen Drive gut sind. Weiten von über 400 yards gehen aber nur stark bergab und mit viel Rückenwind. Dass die äußeren Umstände bei den ganz großen Weiten die entscheidende Rolle spielen, wird dadurch deutlich, dass Spieler wie Steve Stricker, Charley Hoffman und Jeff Sluman schon einmal die Jahresbesten waren. Nichts gegen die Fähigkeiten dieser Herren, aber einen Ruf als Longhitter haben die eigentlich nicht.
